Appomattox Court House is where Robert E. Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to Ulysses S. Grant on April 9, 1865, effectively ending the American Civil War. The Appomattox Court House National Historical Park preserves the historic village, including the McLean House where Grant and Lee famously came face-to-face. The reconstructed courthouse building in the center of the village includes historical artifacts that belonged to soldiers, including military gear, personal effects, as well as letters written to their families.
