The Basin

The Basin is a natural 30-foot wide grotto formation smoothed by the rushing waters the Pemigewasset River in Lincoln, NH. It was once celebrated by Henry David Thoreau in 1893, and today it’s easily accessible off Exit 34A on Interstate 93. After parking, it’s a brief 15 minute nature hike to reach The Basin.

Sorry, swimming isn’t allowed in this glacial “pothole” as it was dubbed by Thoreau, calling it “the most remarkable curiosity of its kind in New England.”
