Tom's Thumb Trailhead
Camelback Mountain is perhaps the most popular hike in the Phoenix, Arizona area, so next time check out Tom’s Thumb.
It’s not that Tom’s Thumb isn’t popular; it certainly is. However, by comparison, you’ll deal with smaller crowds here than Camelback consistently hosts.
You’ll need to be in at least reasonable shape to complete this four-mile, out-and-back trail, and you’ll want to have actual hiking boots (preferably boots that have already been broken in, as well) to deal with the uneven terrain. It’s steep in sections during the climb, and it’s probably longer than you think it’s going to be. Even in cooler months, you’ll likely need to take a few breaks, and in the summer especially, don’t be bashful about taking a few breaks along the way.
The payoff, both along the trail and when you reach the top, is worth the effort. You’ll find wildflowers and random rock formations to keep the views interesting throughout the journey.
As always, pack plenty of water for the journey.
