About two minutes before landing at Washington DC’s Ronald Reagan National Airport, look to your left and have your phone ready. If you’re lucky, and the flight’s descent follows the path of the Potomac River from the north, you’ll see the city’s stunning sights emerge, one by one. There’s Georgetown, then the Watergate complex, then the Kennedy Center, then the Washington Monument – for a brief second, perfectly aligned with the Capitol dome. What a joy it is to see the United States’ defining landmarks come into view.
