Zion National Park announced on Tuesday that the park will receive $33 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation to replace its shuttle system.
The park plans to bring 26 battery-electric buses and 27 charging stations online throughout the park over the next few years.
“The existing fleet has served us well for 21 years but has started to deteriorate with age and use,” park Superintendent Jeff Bradybaugh said. “[The busses] will help to further improve the visitor experience.”
Bus maintenance currently costs the park over $5 million each year according to Zion Forever, the park’s charity.
